Ask for a ‘Greek salad’ in Greece and you’ll get a horiatiki — the village salad. Notably, there’s no lettuce in sight. Here’s what’s actually in it, and why it works.
Just the good stuff
Ripe tomatoes, cucumber, green pepper, red onion, olives and a thick slab of feta on top. A glug of olive oil, a pinch of oregano, done. No filler, no dressing to hide behind.
- Tomatoes — the juicier the better
- Cucumber and green pepper for crunch
- Red onion for bite
- Kalamata olives and a slab of feta
- Olive oil + oregano, nothing else
Why no lettuce?
The horiatiki is about peak-season vegetables tasting like themselves. Lettuce would just get in the way. Every ingredient earns its spot.
It’s the easiest way to bring a little Greek summer to your lunch — any time of year.
